Book Circle

Together, we explore what we read and reflect on what we’ve experienced.

Welcome to this spring book circle!

Bokstavstro (Literal Faith)

by Johanna Larsson

How should we understand the history of Christian mission? Is it a story of crude colonialism or the expansion of the Kingdom of God? And what actually happens to the biblical text when it is translated?

Johanna Larsson’s acclaimed debut poetry collection Literal Faith is freely based on the widely reported journey of missionary John Allen Chau to North Sentinel Island in 2018, where, after only a few attempts to make contact with the isolated people, he was shot and killed on the beach.

Using Chau’s story as a point of departure, Johanna Larsson – who herself travelled abroad on her first and only missionary trip at the age of sixteen – explores translation, mission and devotion. A fascinating, reflective and tender collection of poems, made especially timely by the forthcoming new translation of the New Testament.
