Mini Retreat – Three Wednesdays This Spring

Life rushes by, leaving few moments for stillness. Here, you have the opportunity to pause and reflect. A key theme is longing. In the quiet, we can rest and tune in to our deepest desires. We can ask ourselves: “How do I want to live my life? What brings me joy? What do I long for?”

This is also a chance to explore what happens when our everyday lives intersect with a Bible passage and some thought-provoking questions. No prior knowledge is needed. This mini retreat is open to everyone—whether you are deeply rooted in faith, new to it, or simply curious about Christian belief.

If you have the opportunity, you are welcome to join the Mass at 6:00 PM, with a short coffee break before the mini retreat starts at 7:00 PM.

THREE QUESTIONS FOR MARTIN

What did you do before you came here?
In recent years, I have worked part-time as a singer in the Radio Choir at Berwaldhallen, and the rest of the time as a freelance singer, musician, and composer. Before that, I studied psychology at Stockholm University. Last year, much of my time was devoted to the anniversary suite I composed for Immanuelskyrkan’s 50th anniversary.

What do you do when you’re not working?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, going out into the woods with a bunch of frisbees, or working on carpentry projects at our countryside place in the Norrtälje archipelago.

What is the bravest thing you have ever done?
That’s a tough question. Working with music requires a kind of constant courage, as I always have to throw myself into new music and new collaborations with new people. A big part of the creative process is therefore about living with unanswered questions and hopes—without knowing for sure what the final result will be.

Welcome Martin!

Erika – a rock we will miss in the team!

Erika Ershammar, who has for some time worked as management support, has now returned to her position at Sociala Missionen, from which she had been on leave. Erika has been a rock in many ways, not least through all her work with the anniversary year. Thank you, Erika, for all that you have contributed! Erika is a member of our congregation, so we will continue to see her at Immanuelskyrkan in the future. We wish her all the best going forward!

This year’s edition of the Archbishop’s Lenten book – “Gud är inte plåstret”

Personal stories and poetic fragments intertwine with theology and essays as Tomas Andersson Wij lovingly engages with the Christian tradition he grew up in.

This year’s edition of the Archbishop’s Lenten book – “Gud är inte plåstret” – is written by artist and author Tomas Andersson Wij.

Personal stories and poetic fragments intertwine with theology and essays as Tomas Andersson Wij lovingly engages with the Christian tradition he grew up in. With raw honesty and urgency, he writes about the consequences of being taught as a child to distrust his own body, the human need to define God quickly and decisively, the revival at Allhelgonakyrkan in Stockholm—where he was part of the movement from its beginnings in the 90s—the role of celebration and ecstasy in revitalizing the church, and a God who bleeds and dies with us.

The book is well-suited for reading together with others but can also be read individually—at any time of the year.

You can find the book at the book table next to the information desk.

To Translate God – A Reflection on the Word Made Flesh

Sometimes I am asked to translate some documents from Swedish to English for colleagues here at the church. Usually this is a simple task but sometimes it is hard to catch the real meaning of the author. Language is more than grammar and vocabulary. The true heart of a message includes nuances deeply rooted in the wider cultural context, a context I don’t always understand or find it tricky to express in English. Sometimes the meaning is, as the saying goes, ‘lost in translation’.

It struck me recently that this is a helpful way to think about who Jesus is. At the beginning of his gospel, John writes “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God”. We use words to express ourselves, to get stuff done, to build relationships. And God does the same. God is not a silent, mysterious, unknowable God but a God who communicates, shares, reveals. God speaks Godself out into the creation and into our lives.

But how can we understand that Word? God is fundamentally a foreign language to those of us who, unlike God, are created, fallible and limited.  How can we begin to grasp the true nature of the self-revealing God? As with all literature written in another language we need a translation, a good one, one that properly reflects the divine cultural context and idiom, a translation which remains true to God but also uses the language of human beings.

And the answer of course is Jesus. Jesus is the translation of God into ’human’. John writes “…and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”. In other words, if we want to know God then, as far as it is possible for us to do so, we just need to know Jesus.  There is no more and no less God than Jesus. Jesus is the perfect translation of God into human. In his fully human life we can see the divine life in action; creating, challenging, healing, renewing, protecting, rescuing and loving. There is nothing that is true of God that we do not see in Jesus. There are no new ‘discoveries’ to be made about God that do not correspond to the Jesus we know.

Jesus must be at the centre of all we do, on Sundays, in our midweek activities and in our personal relationship with God. Nothing else will do. Nothing else will reveal the love and goodness of our God, no one else can inspire the deep love and devotion for God that will make a difference in our city and our world. So I invite you to read the ‘old, old story’ again…with the help of a good translation!
