Congregation \u2013 Membership \u2013 Congregational Meetings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I understand that the relationship between congregation \u2013 membership \u2013 congregational meeting<\/em> is not always obvious. Here I would like to share some thoughts on how I see these connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Immanuel Church as a Congregation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Immanuel Church is a Christian community for people from all over the world. Everyone is welcome here. We are part of the worldwide body of Jesus Christ, with Christ himself as the head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are also a congregation within the denomination Equmeniakyrkan<\/strong> \u2013 both a spiritual community and an organisational association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A week at Immanuel includes:
\u2013 services and devotions
\u2013 home visits and discussion groups
\u2013 activities for children, youth, adults and seniors
\u2013 opportunities to sing, play instruments, grow in faith, weave, shower, enjoy a meal, do carpentry, or prepare any of the above \u2013 both in and beyond our premises<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The congregation is carried by strong voluntary engagement, a rich diversity of people, and historically unique financial resources which enable us to employ staff who help us fulfil our vision:
to be a Christian church in Stockholm that embodies hope, care and faith.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Being a Member of Immanuel Church<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Everyone is welcome to participate in our activities, whether or not they are members.
Membership, however, is an invitation<\/strong> to deeper social and spiritual community \u2013 and an opportunity to grow in faith and understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a member, you become part of:
\u2013 a spiritual community
\u2013 a democratic, member-led organisation
\u2013 the body of Christ, where we support one another and follow Jesus as our example<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do people choose to become members?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1. To share faith<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

For more than 100 years, people have gathered in Immanuel Church to share their faith in Jesus. On our website you can read more about:
\u2013 our vision
\u2013 what we believe
\u2013 our inclusive welcome of LGBTQ+ people
\u2013 our ethnic diversity
\u2013 our sustainability policy
\u2013 our organisational structure<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immanuel Church is the largest congregation within Equmeniakyrkan<\/strong>, formed in 2012 by the Mission Covenant Church, the Baptist Union and the Methodist Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. To be part of a multilingual community<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We offer worship and fellowship in Swedish, English and Korean<\/strong> \u2013 a social and supportive community where people can contribute, belong and be supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. To have a voice and influence<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Membership gives the right to:
\u2013 take part in decision-making
\u2013 vote
\u2013 influence the development of the congregation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We work actively to strengthen fellowship across our three language groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. To grow and be formed<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Through teaching, conversation, pastoral care and shared activities, members have the opportunity to grow:
\u2013 spiritually
\u2013 socially
\u2013 personally
\u2013 and to contribute to the growth of others<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Taking Part as a Member in a Congregational Meeting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the congregational meeting, the church seeks God\u2019s will and a shared understanding of its mission in Stockholm.
(Matthew 6:33, Acts 15:28, Immanuel Church\u2019s theological foundation)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because we are a member-led congregation, the congregational meeting is a central element<\/strong> of how we function. It is the members\u2019 forum for insight, dialogue and decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participating is important \u2013 both to understand how the church operates and to help shape its future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are congregational meetings important?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1. They are the members\u2019 forum for insight and influence<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In a democratically organised congregation, it is the members<\/strong> \u2013 not the staff or the elected board \u2013 who \u201cown\u201d the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting provides insight into:
\u2013 finances
\u2013 activities
\u2013 long-term plans<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also the place to ask questions, express opinions and formally influence decisions.
The annual meeting (\u00e5rsm\u00f6tet) is particularly important as we review the past year and look ahead to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. They create trust and transparency<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

When the leadership explains what has happened, what is coming and why decisions have been made, trust grows.
Members gain a clear view of how the work is led \u2013 openly and responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. They are where community and responsibility meet<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Congregational meetings are opportunities to meet, listen and share experiences across languages, backgrounds and worship traditions.
The engagement of members helps the church to develop in ways that reflect its shared values and needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. They ensure democratic and well-grounded decisions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Important decisions are made here regarding:
\u2013 budget
\u2013 activity plans
\u2013 election of board members and other roles
\u2013 the future direction of the congregation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wide participation ensures that decisions are well-founded and democratic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Participation strengthens the whole congregation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

When more people participate:
\u2013 the discussions become richer
\u2013 the decisions become wiser
\u2013 engagement deepens
\u2013 the community becomes stronger<\/p>\n\n\n\n
